Gertrude Marjory Fraser passed away on February 17, 2003, after having been ill for over six months. Her life was celebrated in the BC Provincial Legislature by Cariboo MLA John Wilson and at the Quesnel City Council Chambers by Mayor Nate Bello.

St. Andrews United Church in Quesnel, a small church, was overflowing on February 22 for Gertrude’s funeral. Friends also filled a room adjoining the church. Not everyone who wanted to was able to fit into the building, so some waited at the Seniors’ Centre next door for other mourners to join them for a tea.

A number of vignettes from this project were included during the eulogy given at the service by Gertrude’s son-in-law, Dave Shier. He also noted, “Gertrude had an extraordinary and exciting life. She truly was the first lady of the Cariboo.”
