Steam Baler

Steam baler

Unlike today's baling systems which move with the tractor the steam baler was a stationary machine. It had the wheels so that a team could move it from one working location to another, but once on location the hay was brought to the baler. A small steam engine was used as the power source rather than as with the hay press, a team of two horses walking in a circle.

The plunger and gear systems used to compress the hay are quite formidable and people had to be careful working around the baler. You can see the large pulley wheel on the right which would run a belt to the steam engine and get the power needed for operations. This particular pulley wheel is an old vehicle rim and not likely the original part.
