Single discer

single disc

This is a working single disc used on the farm in field preparation. As with the sulky plow, being able to ride the disc while the horses worked was a major design advancement for the farmer. Depending on the land being worked it would take from two to four horses to make this an efficient operation.

single disc rear view

As can be seen from this rear view the gangs of discs are each at a slight angle. This angle can be increased which then does two things:

  • it increases the cutting action of the implement breaking down the soil faster
  • it increases the draft load for the horses making their work much harder

The job of the farmer was then to balance the cutting action with the load that the horses could handle.
