Seeder

seed drill

This restored seed drill is a very good piece of equipment which could be used for work on the current farm. The seed drill operated by using the discs you see in front to cut a furrow which the seeds fell into at a controlled rate. Chains dragging behind then covered the seeds over.

Here you can see the spouts which followed right behind the discs in order to insure that the seed dropped into the channel. The seeding rate is controlled by a series of gears that only allows seeds to drop through from the storage boxes as each turn of the gears is accomplished.

seed drill settings

These settings for how to seed various kinds of grains is cast right into the machine. There are both types of seed like wheat or oats but also how far apart you want the seeds dropped.

massey seeder

Here is a view of the working parts of an older seeder. All the wood parts have rotted away but the inner workings of the system are fairly clear.
