Frost and Woods mower

Frost and Woods mower in the shop

The Frost and Woods mower you see here partially broken down was part of the Boyd equipment. Though our research has yet to show when the mower was purchased it was again likely later than the 1910s. It is being refurbished in the shop at this point in time because we intend to use it for haying in the late summer, or fall.

tool box top

With this detail shot you get a clear view of the Frost and Woods trade name stamped into the lid of the tool box. This mower is widely regarded as one of the best mowers ever produced because of its excellent balance.

mower bar

Here we see a picture of a full sized mower bar that would require at least a team of two horses with three being preferred to allow for fresher working horses. The balance of the mower is such that when the operator is on the seat there is almost no downward pressure on the pole hitched to the neck yoke. This meant that the horse power could be put into covering the field and not have any wasted in simply holding up the weight.

gear details

As you can see from this photo of the gears the mower is in excellent shape with little or no wear on the gear parts. This was an excellent mower and someone took good care of it. If you are lucky you may be able to see it mowing a field out at Cottonwood any time from July to September.
