Massey dump rake

Massey dump rake The dump rake was another clever development of the pioneer engineers. The concept was simple:

  • put down the rake tines
  • gather up the hay until there was a full load under the operator
  • then by engaging a cog into the wheel
  • the tines were lifted clear leaving a windrow
and once past the pile put down for the next rake. This resulted in a series of lines of hay across the field at right angles to the direction of travel of the team and rake.

Hitching the team for the dump rake was a crucial process. If the implement tongue was too high the teeth would dig into the ground too much and the dump would not be very high. If the tongue was too low you missed hay and tended to lose parts of the windrow as you were working.
