| Journal Thomsons River October 1843 [Kept by John Tod and Donald Manson]
Clear & warm. nothing particular Two men at work on the opposite side as usual_ Rain_ Fair weather_ at midday the party from F. River with the Salmon Say, 8400 having left 2500 in cash from want of Cords_ Mild with light showers_ Ignace & Martele set to plaster the Kitchen_ Lefleure with Indians crossed over the old stable which will answer our purpose at the new establishment as before_ M.rW. Todd & Douliet, who returned from his Ind.n life with the party of yesterday, went to cut hay_ Fine weather_ Work as before Seina looking after the Horses. Rained heavy, till midday when it again cleared up ._ The party so long looked for from N. Caledonia arrived to day in charge of M.r McBean, and with our own people will set out tomorrow for OK.n & Colvile_ For part of the day the horses were collected. M.r Todd, Ignace & an Indian equiped for OK.n with 2000 Salmon for that post_ Lefleure & Martele accompany M.r.McBean, the former to return from Colvile with the YF Express, Pork eaters & property, The latter expected there from Vancouver. The whole set forth about 2 O'clock P.M. The weather haSaturday length cleared up & promises a long cessation of rain & foggs. There now remains besides the boy William Felix, three men with my self and Lolo_ Employed Indians to assist in crossing over the property from the old habitation (now falling fast to pieces) to the new Estab.t, which tho' far from being complete, we will take possession of tomorrow, or the day after. A slight frost on the night, but warm on the day_ Douliet putting up a small house for the calves_ Favel & Fallerdeau plaining boards. The last of the property was crossed over at mid day & shortly after I left the old Fort I hope for ever -- indeed from the shocking catastrophe which once occurred there, it ought to have been abandoned long ago_ The weather unusually fine_ Lolo alone remains at the old Fort until a temporary place, at which Seina is now at work, is got up for him & the Ind.ns_ The men employed as before_ Women taking up our potatoes in the garden at the new Fort, which, of all the different places planted last spring, yields by far the most productive & the best crop_ Delightful weather_ nothing particular. Work goes on as usual_ Frost during the night but warm on the day_ Two men working at doors, one putting up a small house for the calves_ The young chief of the upper Lake came in to day, offering to supply us with a few bags of potatoes, if we would send for them, which will be done as soon as time will permit us_ The last of our potatoes in the garden at the new estabt were got out of the ground today in all 15 bags. not so bad from new ground broke up last fall_ The house for the calves finished. Warm & pleasant for the season. Douliet & Seina assisting to complete a small house for Lolo, who still remains with his family at the old Fort Sent Lolo with four Indians, two Canoes & some property to the upper Lake to trade potatoes_ Douliet & Seina finished Lolo's house. Cha.s Favel & Fallerdeau dressing boards_ weather continues fine. Clear warm weather, wind S.W._ Douliet plastering the partitions of the dwelling house_ Fallerdeau dressing boards and Favel fixing doors_ Weather as before_ Crossed over our horned cattle to this side the river, one however (an old ox) could not be got over, he is so wild._ Traded two large beaver & a few Salmon from an Ind.n F. River. Lolo with his Indians returned early this morning with about sixty bush. of potatoes of a superior quality obtained form the gang of the Young Chief. Two men disabled from duty Fallerdeau & Felix, from having accidentally trode upon nails in the plank laying about & which was brought from the old Fort_ A light fall of Snow during the night which however disappeared before mid day_ only two men now at work Favel & Douliet_ Fallerdeau is no better, his Knee much inflamed_ Cloudy but mild_ Douliet & Fallerdeau dressing plank_ Favel making doors An Ind.n employed to spear Salmon brought us three this morning_ Clear & mild with the wind at South A slight frost during the night, but warm throughout the day_ Warm weather_ Seina with two Indians & ten horses brought home loads of hay_ The men dressing boards_ Weather as yesterday_ Seina & two other Indians bring home the hay on horse back_ Two men dressing plank & one fitting up windows Seina collecting the horses for the purpose of cutting the young Stallions. The men employed as yesterday_ pleasant weather
