Search

How the search works

The search tool for the historic photograph area is based upon a keyword search. A search string can consist of any number of Subject Headings or keyword fragments. A matching search would result if all words in a search string are found. This type of search uses logical AND as a keyword connector. (eg. Anglican Church would produce a listing of all records with Anglican AND Church)

Forming a query

A few simple rules for your search.

  1. Use multiple keywords to narrow a topic

example: Anglican Church would provide a more refined search than church
  2. Use keyword fragments

example: Thom would find Thomson, Thompson
  3. Use singular words rather than plural

    example: horse rather than horses
  4. Leave out unimportant words

    example: the, a, if

Sample searches

Simple search: Search String = horse

The results of this search would be a list of search results that contain the keyword fragment horse. The matched words would include horse, horses, horse sports, horsemanship and other words or phrases containing horse.

Refined Search: Search String = horse plough

The result of this search would be a list of search results that consist of a horse or horses with a plough or ploughing.
