First Nations Curriculum Project

INTEGRATED RESOURCE PACKAGE

"The Integrated Resource Package (IRP) combines four key elements of learning to form a functional curriculum overview document. IRPs provide the basic information that teachers will require in order to implement the curriculum" in British Columbia. (Source: BC Ministry of Education)

The curriculum material presented here by David Perry, has been designed to meet the needs of students and teachers in First Nations Futures 11/12 (a course developed at Penticton Secondary School), and the British Columbia Ministry of Education's First Nations Studies 12, and Social Studies 10.

 


When using these inquiries, Learning Outcomes for First Nations 12 that will be addressed are:

SKILLS AND PROCESSES
It is expected that students will:

  • demonstrate the ability to think critically, including the ability to:
  • define an issue or problem
  • develop hypotheses and supporting arguments
  • gather relevant information from appropriate sources
  • assess the reliability, currency, and objectivity of evidence
  • assess the role of values, ethics, and beliefs
  • recognize cause and effect relationships and the implications of events
  • demonstrate appropriate research and oral and written presentation shills, including the ability to:
  • access and interpret material from a wide variety of primary and secondary sources, including print sources, electronic sources, and First Nations oral traditions
  • present in oral and written form
  • design, construct, compose, and perform
  • create and interpret maps
  • present and integrate data in graphic form

LAND AND RELATIONS II
It is expected that students will:

  • compare current and traditional First Nations resource use and management
  • analyze the exchange of ideas, practices, and materials and contemporary contexts, with reference to:
  • governance
  • economics
  • environment
  • language

CONTACT, COLONIALISM, AND RESISTANCE I
It is expected that students will:

  • assess the impacts of contact and colonialism on social organization, spiritual beliefs, and governance among BC First Nations

CONTACT, COLONIALISM, AND RESISTANCE II
It is expected that students will:

  • assess the impact of changing post-contact economies on First Nations societies
  • describe the varied and evolving responses of First Nations peoples to contact and colonialism.

CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS -- ORAL TRADITIONS AND LITERATURE
It is expected that students will:

  • analyze stereotypical and authentic portrayals of First Nations people in various works, both historical and contemporary

 

LEADERSHIP AND SELF-DETERMINATION I
It is expected that students will:

  • explain the significance of terms related to the discussion of Aboriginal identity and self-determination
  • describe the experiences of Aboriginal veterans during and after the two World Wars and the Korean War
  • identify historical and contemporary challenges facing Aboriginal women within Aboriginal and Canadian societies
