Inquiry Two: INTERPRETATION SKILLS

A. Find Photo ID no. okn 0142 --
"Native cowboys"

  1. Comment on the elements of "dress" that lend the use of the title to this photograph.

  2. Suggest whether you think these elements of dress are practical, given the life style of the period, or whether they are costume pieces for display purposes.

  3. Explain how you think the subjects of the photograph are feeling. Are they being forced to have their picture taken; are they happy to be there? Use descriptive terms to justify your answer. (Compare to photographs okn 0209 and okn 0192.)

  4. What might the photographer be trying to convey with this photograph? Put yourself in the position of the person taking the picture. What might your reason be for wanting to record this image?

  5. Infer (conclude from the facts) whether it is possible for a photograph to convey a different set of impressions from what the photographer intended. Give examples of how this might or might not be the case using this photograph.
