Cladocerans of the Thompson-Okanagan Region

Collecting cladocerans
at Lac du Bois, near Kamloops, BC.

This study reports on cladocerans collected from lakes, and ponds throughout the Thompson- Okanagan region in British Columbia Canada. The study area includes the drainage basins of the North Thompson, South Thompson, Okanagan, Nicola and Similkameen rivers. This region of British Columbia is characterized by warm, dry summers and cold winters. The 83 sampling sites are listed in Table 1 from the most southerly to the most northerly. Collection localities and Royal British Columbia Museum catalogue numbers are given for each species.

We were concerned primarily with planktonic species so only those families containing planktonic species were considered. Some species reported here are not considered planktonic but are included as part of a family containing a number of planktonic species. Of the nine families of cladocerans reported from British Columbia, five, the Bosminidae, Daphniidae, Holopediidae, Leptodoridae, and Polyphemidae, contain primarily or entirely planktonic species. A sixth family, the Sididae, is also included in this report. Although most species in this family live on and around submerged vegetation, one species, Diaphanosoma birgei Korínek 1981, is a common component of the plankton in many lakes, and other species in this family are occasionally collected in plankton tows. Three other families the Chydoridae, Macrothricidae and Moinidae contain primarily bottom-dwelling species and so were not included in this study. Twenty-four species from the six families under consideration were identified from these collections (Table 2).

Besides specimens collected specifically for this study, collections from the British Columbia Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, the Royal British Columbia Museum and the Canadian Museum of Nature were examined. Except where noted all catalogue numbers used in this report are Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM) numbers.
