Thomas Rabbitt crossed North America working as a railway bridge builder. He co-owned a flour mill at Armstrong with his brother Dan. In 1886 he bought the Hudson's Bay Trading Post at Otter Flats and moved it to Slate Creek where it burned in 1908. He died in 1926, survived by his wife Euphemia who lived until 1974, her 100th year. Leona Brewer is one of her 12 children. Her husband Leonard is the son of Horace and Matilda Brewer from Lumby and Vernon. |

In 1907, Leslie C. Hill planted the first model orchard in Osoyoos. He died in 1916. From 1916-1919, George F. Fraser leased the Hill fruit ranch. Osoyoos Orchards Ltd., a Penticton consortium, was formed to purchase the estate of Leslie Hill and George Fraser was one of the major shareholders in this land development company. The Fraser Plaskett Land Company Limited, established 1911-ca.1950, was formed to develop a parcel of land located on the south east part of the northern section of Osoyoos Lake (purchased from F. X. Richter in 1910). In 1938, George J. Fraser established Fraser Real Estate where he worked as a real estate agent, an insurance agent and a notary public. |

Berhard Webber's activities from the late 1930s to the early 1980s included being: a school principal, a District Superintendent of Schools in locations throughout British Columbia, an Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction for British Columbia Ministry of Education, and finally Superintendent of Special Education in the Ministry. He was also a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) Member of the Legislative Assembly for the historic riding of Similkameen in British Columbia from 1941-1945. He was president of the Okanagan Historical Society, 1989-1991, and the Oliver Heritage Society, in 1988 and 1989. He and his wife Jean were active in the Society for the Revival of Indian Arts and Crafts in Oliver and Osoyoos in the late 1930s and early 1940s, as was their friend Anthony Walsh. Walsh taught children at the Inkameep Indian School on the Osoyoos Indian Reserve ca. 1932-1942. They have actively supported the performing arts and crafts through acting in, directing, or organizing little theatre and drama festivals, and concerts for students and adult audiences. Jean Webber was president of the Okanagan Mainline Regional Arts Council, 1971-1973. At this time the first Okanagan Composers' Festival was planned and held, and the Okanagan Image Festival of the Arts was undertaken. Mrs. Webber has been an editor of the Okanagan Historical Society Reports, the book Okanagan Sources, and other publications. She is also an artist in her own right. |
