CO-OPERATIVE PACKING HOUSES
Abstract:
| Bio/hist Note |
Packing houses, which were run as business enterprises by co-operative societies, were formed in the South Okanagan and Similkameen from the 1920s onwards. These packing houses assisted the agricultural industry and the fruit and vegetable trade in the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valley. Over time the vegetable trade declined. Beginning in the 1960s, many of the packing houses and their co-operative societies began to amalgamate. Today, there are only four tree fruit co-operative packing houses remaining in the South Okanagan: the Monashee Co-operative Growers' Association, Osoyoos; the Naramata Co-operative Growers' Exchange; the Okanagan Similkameen Cooperative Growers' Association, Oliver; and the B.C. Fruit Packers' Cooperative, Summerland and Kelowna. These co-operative organizations are owned by and operated for the benefit of the grower member-owners. The growers own in common a packing house(s) to handle the grading, packaging and storage of tree fruit. Financial returns are pooled, usually by grade of product, among members of the co-operatives. At one time, co-operative packing houses throughout the Okanagan Valley pooled in common. More recently, pooling has been done on an individual packing house basis. Since 1939, much of the tree fruit from the co-operative packing houses has been sold through B.C. Tree Fruits Limited, the marketing arm of the British Columbia Fruit Growers' Association. |
