Bio/hist Note Private hospitals were opened in Penticton in 1909 and 1916. The second hospital, located on Haven Hill Road, became the Penticton Hospital ca. 1918. In 1953, it moved to its present location at 755 Carmi Avenue. Major renovations and expansions occurred from 1971 onwards.
Summary Penticton Regional Hospital records 1922- include: minutes of monthly and annual general meetings of the board of trustees and committees of the Penticton Hospital Society, 1922- ; hospital reports to the board of trustees, 1922- ; executive memoranda; scrapbooks of photographs and newspaper clippings, 1950- ; and disaster plans, 1958 and 1961. Also includes: minutes of the Planning Committee for additions to the hospital, 1968-1969; a 1974 report on chilled and frozen food production and preservation for hospital food service; a 1989 fund raising brochure containing a chronological local history of the Penticton Regional Hospital.
Restrictions Minutes of in camera meetings are restricted.
General note The Penticton Regional Hospital is one of the few in British Columbia which has a board of trustees voted for by the general electorate, instead of being appointed by the provincial government or by members of a hospital society.

Bio/hist Note The Ladies' Aid to the Penticton Hospital, established in 1913, received its formal charter in 1923. Alternately known as the Women's Aid to the Penticton Hospital, it changed its name to Senior Auxiliary to the Penticton Hospital in 1950. In January 1980 it became the Afternoon Auxiliary.
Summary Afternoon Auxiliary to the Penticton Regional Hospital records 1932- include: minutes 1932-; vouchers received and paid 1934, 1940-1941; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and photographs pertaining to volunteer workers in the hospital and fund raising activities; treasurers' reports, 1960- ; and a two page history, 1913-1985. The above records also pertain to this women's society under its former names: the Ladies' Aid to the Penticton Hospital, the Women's Aid to the Penticton Hospital, and the Senior Auxiliary to the Penticton Hospital.

Bio/hist Note St. Martin's Hospital, Oliver, was run from 1942-1972 as a religious health facility by the Sisters of St. Anne, an order of the Catholic Church. In 1972, the South Okanagan Hospital commenced operations and moved into a new building in 1973.

Abstract:

Bio/hist Note The Ladies' Auxiliary to St. Martin's Hospital was established in September 1942. In 1945, it became the Oliver-Osoyoos Auxiliary to St. Martin's Hospital. In 1947, it split to form the Oliver Hospital Auxiliary and the Osoyoos Hospital Auxiliary. In 1953, the Oliver Hospital Auxiliary divided into an Afternoon Branch and an Evening Branch. In 1973, with the closing of St. Martin's Hospital, it became the Oliver Auxiliary to the newly established South Okanagan General Hospital. The auxiliary kept its afternoon and evening branches.
General note Significant events concerning the auxiliaries to St. Martin's Hospital were recorded in the "Chronicles", diaries kept by the Sisters of St. Ann, 1942-1972. (See "South Okanagan General Hospital, Records: Related Docs and Bio/hist Note" for further information.)
