Bio/hist Note The Penticton Public Library reports to the City of Penticton through a Library Board which is appointed by the Mayor and Council. The City of Penticton provides ongoing funding for the Library. When School District No. 15 (Penticton) was formed in 1946, Penticton automatically became part of the Okanagan Union Library, a regional library established in 1936. In 1953 the Union Library changed its name to the Okanagan Regional Library. In 1969, Penticton left the Okanagan Regional Library system and became an independent municipal library. The Penticton Public Library Association, established ca. 1922, became the Penticton Public Library Board in 1969. Today, the Penticton Public Library also services the West Bench.
Summary Penticton Public Library records 1946- include: annual reports of the Chairman of the Board, financial reports, minutes of annual general meetings, and monthly, special and committee meetings, 1969- ; plans and photographs of the new library building, ca. 1965- ; scrapbooks of photographs and newspaper clippings, 1974- ; policies; Board correspondence; newspaper clippings; statistics, 1979- ; reports sent to the Library Services Branch, 1980- ; and a local history of the Penticton Public Library. Also includes: 1946 correspondence with the Provincial Government of British Columbia pertaining to the formation of School District No. 15 (Penticton); photographs of the old library at Penticton City Hall; Okanagan Union Library District and Okanagan Regional Library annual reports, 1948-1964; a 1967 research report done by the Okanagan Regional Library, Planning and Development Committee; studies on the separation of the municipality of Penticton from the Okanagan Regional Library system.
