Bio/hist Note The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, formed in 1966, extends from Summerland in the north, to Osoyoos in the south, and Princeton in the west. Other municipalities included within the District are: Penticton, Keremeos and Oliver. There are eight electoral areas which, in addition to the rural areas, include the unincorporated communities of Coalmont, Cawston, Hedley, Kaleden, Naramata, Okanagan Falls, Olalla and Tulameen.

Summary Regional district government of Okanagan-Similkameen, Administration Department records 1966- include: Certificate of Incorporation; supplementary Letters Patent; by-laws; resolutions; agendas and minutes of general and committee meetings of the Board; petitions; agreements and contracts; legal opinions and proceedings; licences; leases; annual, committee and research reports and notes; oaths; press releases; clippings; correspondence and memoranda; poll lists; voter registration cards; debenture lists; property inventories; fire department inventories; policy manuals; and organizational charts. The above records pertain to: agriculture; legal actions and defences; appropriations and expenditures; the Okanagan Basin [Implementation] Water Board; noxious insect control; the Okanagan-Similkameen Regional Hospital District; the Keremeos Diagnostic and Treatment Centre; arenas; community halls; swimming pool operations; regional and community parks; parks and recreation commissions; recreational facilities, activities and programs; senior citizens' apartments (dwellings for the aged); garbage control; septic tank effluent and refuse disposal; sewerage systems; wells; fires and fire protection; weed control; nuisance and disturbance regulations; untidy and unsightly premises; animal control; urban transit; house numbering; boundary changes; soil removal regulations; firearm control; flood control; development of subdivisions and housing; the Industrial Development Commission for economic development projects; and theatre and library additions in Penticton. Bio/hist Note The Keremeos Volunteer Fire Department, established in 1940, joined and provided fire protection to the Keremeos Irrigation District in 1962. In 1976, the Fire Department joined the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.
Summary Keremeos and District Volunteer Fire Department records 1940- include: cancelled cheques, 1940-1944; minutes of meetings 1941, 1944-1945, 1949-1963, and 1967- ; attendance rolls 1945-1946, and 1963-1964; correspondence 1948-1964; and notes of weekly practices, 1979. Also includes a 1976 fifty page local history of the Fire Department. Above records pertain to fires and fire protection in Keremeos, Cawston and Olalla. Restrictions. .An appointment is necessary; permission is needed from the Fire Chief; available to approved and accredited researchers only.

Bio/hist Note Regional planning was done by the South Okanagan Planning Board, 1963-1966. Regional and settlement planning was a function of the Regional District, 1967-1983. The Development Services Department was formerly known as the Planning Department.

The above records pertain to: building inspection; stove installations; the Board of Variance; flood control; and nuisance and unsightly premises regulations.
Restrictions To see building plans permission is needed from the Building Inspector and the owner of the building. Once permission is obtained two days notice is required.

Summary Regional district government of Okanagan-Similkameen, Public Works Department, Pest Control Division records 1970- include: correspondence; logs; by-law violation case files with notices, correspondence and photographs; annual reports; statistics on violations; surveys; maps of fruit tree locations; photographs of neglected orchards and infected fruit. The above records pertain to: domestic animal control; codling moth (Sterile Insect Release Program), mosquito and other insect control; knapweed and other weed control.
