Other Research Sources Relating to
Dorothea Allison

Besides the letters, a number of other research sources relating to Dorothea Allison are available on-line and in repositories. To access the complete collection of historic photographs related to Dorothea Allison, go to the Living Landscapes Historic Photographs Search page. Enter the name "McDonnell" (which is the last name of the donors of the photographs.) This is the easiest way to list all of the photographs at once, though not all of the ones that appear in the resulting list are relevant. Disregard any pictures referring to the "Rainbow Ranch" and all photographs from rrc0045 to rrc0085. All photographs starting with the letters "pmc" are from the collection of John Stokes, Dorothea Allison's cousin.

A number of archival sources also exist at the Greater Vernon and Area Museum and Archives. Minutes of the school board meetings Dorothea Allison attended are available in the "Oyama Rural School District, 1910-1925" fonds. The "Kalamalka Women's Institute" fonds refer to Dorothea Allison numerous times. Copies of The Vernon Daily News , the newspaper circulated in Oyama at the time of the letters being written, are available at the Vernon Archives, on microfilm at the Okanagan University College library, and elsewhere. Because it was the significant newspaper in the area, the local news of Oyama was regularly reported and it often mentioned Dorothea Allison. In addition, her obituary can be found in this paper, appearing in the Deaths-Funerals section, February 21, 1981.

Dorothea Allison also ventured into the literary world. During the Second World War she compiled a book of poetry written by local settlers. The Songs of Kalamalka was published in 1944 and was sold in order to raise money for the Red Cross. Dorothea Allison also wrote a children's book, A Fairy's Garland of B.C. Flowers , which was illustrated by a local artist, Janet Middleton. Both of these books are available in the Special Collection of the Okanagan University College Library.
