Introduction

The Muskwa-Kechika Pictorial History Project tells the story of the Muskwa-Kechika and its transition from an unplanned wilderness landscape to a zoned and legislated Management Area with a mandate to maintain wilderness and wildlife forever, while allowing human use, including industrial use outside of the Provincial Parks. It is a unique designation, a lasting tribute to the land use planning tables that negotiated the agreements that were its genesis.

This project utilizes the images and words of Wayne Sawchuk to highlight some of the geology, human history, First Nation's history and values, rivers, lakes, wildlife, natural processes, industrial history, hotsprings, and amazing landscapes of this great wilderness area.

The images remain the copyright of Wayne Sawchuk, © 2005. Permission is granted to the Royal BC Museum to use these images for non-profit use in print or website in association with this project. For other use, permission must be sought by contacting Wayne Sawchuk, at (250) 788-2685.

The text portion of the project has been adapted from the book Muskwa-Kechika, the Wild Heart of Canada's Northern Rockies , by Wayne Sawchuk. Don Pettit, of Photographics, produced image files. In addition, Don served as technical advisor to the project.

It has been a pleasure to put this project together, and it is my sincere hope that others may gain a greater understanding of one of BC's greatest natural assets, the unparalleled Muskwa-Kechika Management Area.

Thank you, and enjoy!
