Introduction Growing up in a guide outfitting family in North Eastern British Columbia, many of my earliest memories were of pack horse outfits loading up and heading for the hills, and of the stories that were told of life on the trail. There always seemed to be a Hudsons Hope connection. Shortly after I moved into the Hudson's Hope community a few years ago, this opportunity, through the Royal BC Museum's Living Landscapes program, came up to try and bring some of those tales back to life. Although many of the details had faded, I soon found there were bits here and there; in peoples memories, in old photo albums and boxes of pictures, in various archives, and numerous manuscripts. What follows is my attempt to pull those pieces together, to provide a glimpse of those early days of guiding and packing, and insights into some of the many individuals who helped get those outfits down the trail. I hope you will enjoy the read! Ross Peck
