Mary Anderson Mary Anderson was also one of the first pioneers. She helped build and run the hotel. The hotel is described as being “a ghastly place” (Griffiths); however, it served its purpose for people staying there. The hotel had a sign which read “Beer Parlour” but Mary had to paint out the “Beer” to comply with the laws of the day (Griffith). When the train passed through Pacific there was a 20 minute stop, which was just enough time “for the travel-wise drummers to sprint to the “Parlour” and get back with two dozen warm bottles of beer” (Griffith).
