Cordwood

The practice of cutting cordwood began in the early 1800s.  In the earliest days of this practice, cordwood was cut for Skeena River steamboats, and was also used in the manufacture of railway ties for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. With the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, demand for cordwood increased significantly.  Camps began to appear with greater frequency along the Skeena River.  Sternwheeler traffic increased commensurately, and cordwood became an important component of the economic development of the Skeena region.
