Somatochlora walshii (Brush-tipped Emerald)

BC conservation rank: S4. Yellow List.
Description: The side of the thorax has two pale marks, a short stripe at the front and an oval spot behind. The short, dark abdomen has small yellow spots on the sides of segments 5 to 7, at least. Male's appendages, fig. 13a; they have distinctive tufts of hair at the tips. Female's vulvar lamina is dark; shape, fig. 14b. Length: male 44 mm, female 47 mm.
Global Range: British Columbia east to Newfoundland; south to New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana and Oregon (Needham et al. 2000). Faunal element: Southern Boreal (see Appendix 2).
BC Distribution: Throughout the southern two-thirds of BC north to the Skeena and Peace river basins.
Biology: Uncommon. Breeds in sedge meadows or fens (Wm01; Wf01, Wf05-06; Ws06) typically with small slow streams flowing through them.
BC flight period: late June to mid September; most records are from mid July to early August.
