Somatochlora hudsonica (Hudsonian Emerald)

BC conservation rank: S5. Yellow List.
Description: Very similar to S. albicincta, but larger. The thorax sides are brassy green with one tan, blunt-tipped bar that can be indistinct. The abdomen has narrow white rings. Male's appendages, fig. 13l; vulvar lamina, fig. 14l. Length: male 52 mm, female 52 mm.
Global Range: Alaska east through the Northwest Territories to northwestern Ontario; south, at high elevations in the Rocky Mountains, to Colorado. Faunal element: Western Boreal (see Appendix 2).
BC Distribution: Widespread east of the Coast Mountains; not recorded in the Columbia-Kootenay region, but known from the Alberta Rockies.
Biology: Uncommon in most of its BC range, especially in the south, where it lives at higher elevations. Breeds in deep, sedge-bordered lakes and ponds (Wm01-02, Wm06; Wf01) and in peatland ponds (Wf01, Wf06). The males patrol the outer edge of the emergent vegetation.
BC flight period: early June to mid September; collections range from early June to mid August.
