Somatochlora cingulata (Lake Emerald)

BC conservation rank: S4. Yellow List. This species has been down-listed twice from the original S2S3 given it in 1995 as our understanding of its status improved during the northern surveys.
Description: The largest emerald in our region, as big as a small darner. Similar to S. albicincta and S. hudsonica, but larger. The thorax sides are dark brassy green-brown without marks; the abdomen has narrow white rings. Male's appendages, fig. 13m; vulvar lamina, fig. 14m. Length: male 60 mm, female 58 mm.
Global Range: Ranges across the southern boreal forests from Newfoundland and Labrador to central British Columbia; south to Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wyoming (Needham et al. 2000). Faunal element: Southern Boreal (see Appendix 2).
BC Distribution: Southern and central BC east of the Coast Mountains; north to Williston Lake.
Biology: Often hard to find, but can be common around midday in its preferred habitat: mountain and plateau fishing lakes, usually edged with sedges and peat and dotted with floating waterlilies (Nuphar lutea -- Utricularia macrorhiza communities; Wm01-02, Wm06; Wf01). Adults are often difficult to observe and catch, for they usually fly rapidly over open water several metres from shore. However, in some situations they patrol right along the lake margin.
BC flight period: late June to early September; most records from mid July to early August.
