Ophiogomphus severus (Pale Snaketail)BC conservation rank: S5. Yellow List.Description: The face is yellow with no stripes. The thorax is green-yellow to green with fine brown stripes on the sides and a prominent oval spot in front of the forewing base. The abdomen is dark brown, sometimes mostly yellow below, with large yellow spots on top. Length: male 51 mm, female 52 mm. Global Range: British Columbia east to Saskatchewan; south to Arkansas, Kansas, New Mexico and California (Needham et al. 2000). Faunal element: Western (see Appendix 2). Range: Western. Widespread in BC east of the Coast Mountains; unknown north of 55ºN west of the Rockies, but recorded at scattered localities in the Northeast. Biology: Uncommon. Most records are from clear streams, but this species also develops in large, muddy rivers and in lakes, where it sometimes emerges on floating waterlily leaves (Nuphar lutea associations). BC flight period: early June to mid September; most collections are from mid July to early August.
