Leucorrhinia hudsonica (Hudsonian Whiteface)

BC conservation rank: S5. Yellow List.
Description: Similar to the Boreal Whiteface, but smaller and with less red or yellow on its abdomen. Male has strong red spots on top of segments 1 to 7, the one on 7 longer than its width; female's spots can be yellow or red. Hamule, fig. 16b; vulvar lamina, fig. 17b. Length: male 29 mm, female 28 mm.
Global Range: Alaska east to Labrador and Newfoundland; south to California, Nebraska, and Virginia (Needham et al. 2000). Faunal element: Widespread Boreal (see Appendix 2).
BC Distribution: Widespread.
Biology: The most widespread whiteface in our region and one of the province's most common skimmers. Most abundant at boggy lakeshores and peatlands in the mountains and the north. (e.g., Wm01-02, Wm04-06; Wf01, 05-08; Wb13, 50-52).
BC flight period: late April to early September; most records are from late may to mid August.
