Ladona julia (Chalk-fronted Corporal)

BC conservation rank: S5. Yellow List.
Description: Mostly brown. Named "corporal" because immatures have a pair of pale stripes on the top of the thorax; they also have a dark stripe on top of the abdomen. Mature adults are "chalk-fronted" with distinctive pale pruinescence on the front of the thorax, as well as the base of abdomen - white on males, grey on females. The wings are clear except for small, dark marks at the bases; those on the hindwings are triangular. Length: male 42 mm, female 40 mm.
Global range: Southern British Columbia east to Nova Scotia; south to West Virginia and California. Faunal element: Transition (see Appendix 2).
BC Distribution: Widespread in the southern half of the province.
Biology: Found around peaty forest ponds (e.g., in fens such as Wf07) and swampy lake bays (e.g. Nuphar lutea - Utricularia macrorhiza association); favours slightly acidic waters, where it can be surprisingly abundant. It often rests on rocks, logs, floating waterlily leaves or the bare ground and can be tame.
BC flight period: late May to early September; mostly recorded from mid June to late July.
