Epitheca spinigera (Spiny Baskettail)

BC conservation rank: S5. Yellow List.
Description: The orange-yellow face has a dark T-spot. Male's appendages, fig 12a. Female's appendages are 3 mm long; vulvar lamina, fig. 12c. Length: male, female 48 mm.
Global Range: British Columbia east to Nova Scotia; south to New Jersey, Kentucky, Iowa, Montana and California (Needham et al. 2000). Faunal element: Transition (see Appendix 2).
BC Distribution: Widespread on the south coast and southern interior valleys; scattered localities in the Cariboo-Chilcotin and north to Smithers.
Biology: Infrequently encountered in the southern valleys of the province, although at times it can be numerous. Breeds in lakes and ponds (Wm01-02; Wm05-06; Wf01), but often seen hunting well away from water. Flies early in the season.
BC flight period: late April to late August; mostly records are from early June to late July.
