Enallagma civile (Familiar Bluet)BC conservation rank: S1. Red List. The record of E. civile at Bridge Lake (23 July 1934, E.R. Buckell) has posed many questions because it is far from its normal range and has not been seen in BC since the first collection. Is the record valid? The specimens were collected by a well-known entomologist, E.R. Buckell, who collected many dragonflies in BC. They are properly identified. There is no suggestion of a data mixup. Why is this species, usually very common and abundant where it is found, not recorded elsewhere in BC? Assuming the record is good, the logical explanation is that this population is a naturally disjunct one, far from the other most westerly populations in Oregon and Montana. The Bridge Lake area is poorly collected and no inventory has specifically been undertaken to look for the species. For the present, S1 is the reasonable rank.Description: Male's appendages, fig. 4b. Female has no pale area on top of segment 8. Length: male 35 mm, female 33 mm. Global Range: British Columbia east to Newfoundland, south to the West Indies, Mexico and South America. Also in Hawaii. (Westfall and May 1996). Faunal element: Austral (see Appendix 2). BC Distribution: Recorded only in the Cariboo region south of the northern study area (Bridge Lake). To be looked for. Biology: One of the most common and widespread American damselflies, especially east of the Rockies, but recorded only once in BC. Closely related to E. carunculatum. Prefers marshy ponds and lakeshores (Wm01-02, Wm04-06); often colonizes temporary and newly created water bodies such as farm dugouts and gravel pit ponds. BC flight period: (probably) early June to mid October; the only BC record is from 23 July. Management and protection considerations: Inventory of ponds and lakeshores in the Bridge Lake area is required to confirm the presence of E. civile in the region. Only after site-specific information is available can management issues be addressed.
