Coenagrion interrogatum (Subarctic Bluet)BC conservation rank: S4S5. Yellow List. Before the northern surveys, C. interrogatum was considered S4, but intensive observation has shown it to be rather common.Description: The male's thorax has strong dark marks underneath; blue stripes on top are divided like a thick exclamation mark; abdominal segment 2 has a black mark on top and a large mark on each side; appendages, fig. 3b. Female is blue or greenish, marked with black; abdominal segment 8 is black at the base, segments 9 and 10 are mostly blue, and 9 has a black spot on top. Length: male 30 mm, female 31 mm. Global Range: Yukon and British Columbia east to Labrador and Newfoundland; south to Maine, Wisconsin and Montana; absent from the Great Plains (Westfall and May 1996). Faunal element: Northern Boreal (see Appendix 2). BC Distribution: Widespread east of the Coast Mountains from the Arctic treeline to the US border; common over most of the north. Biology: The most boreal of North American damselflies, this species lives in a variety of peatlands (e.g., Wf01, 05-08; Wb13), although it is common only in those containing floating aquatic moss (Cannings and Cannings 1994). In southern BC it occurs only in subalpine wetlands in the mountains and high plateaus. BC flight period: late May to late August; all collections are from late May to mid August.
