Ischnura Charpentier

Ischnura is a cosmopolitan genus, occurring almost everywhere Odonata live, although it is mostly absent from boreal habitats. Its distribution in North America is decidedly southern. British Columbia has four species, but only the two most widespread, I. cervula and I. perparva, occur in the Columbia Basin. B.C.'s male species are mostly blue and green; females may be similarly coloured or be tan or orange. The abdomen is usually
Ischnura cervula with prey
black above with a blue tip. Males have a distinct projection on top of the last abdominal segment. Females may develop extensive pruinosity as they age.
