(Insecta: Odonata) of the Columbia Basin, British Columbia: Field Surveys, Collections Development and Public Education Table of Contents
The Gomphidae is a large family that is poorly represented in the Columbia Basin. Only four species in three genera -- Gomphus, Ophiogomphus and Stylurus -- occur. Gomphids are not commonly seen in the region, but when they are encountered they are readily recognized by their widely separated eyes and their green or yellow bodies striped in brown and black. Females lack an ovipositor and drop their eggs directly into clear streams and along the sandy shallows of larger lakes. The larvae burrow in the bottom sediments of these water bodies. Genus:
