The Protected Areas Strategy

The PAS is a set of policies which guide the selection and management of protected areas in British Columbia. As one major component of the provincial land-use planning strategy, it reflects British Columbia's commitment to protecting and restoring the quality and integrity of our environment while ensuring a sound and prosperous economy.

These protected areas are set aside for a variety of uses including nature preserves, scientific research areas, cultural heritage areas, and areas for education, appreciation and recreational activities. The system of protected areas includes land as well as fresh-water. The land and resources in protected areas may not be sold and mining, logging, hydro dams or oil and gas development are not allowed.

The Benefits

Protected areas contribute to the ecological, social and economic health and well-being of our province. They:

contribute to the preservation of our natural and biological diversity;

provide natural benchmarks for scientific research;

contribute to the preservation and understanding of our cultural heritage;

provide outdoor classrooms for all British Columbians to enjoy;

contribute to the long-term growth of our tourism industry and the diversification of our economy; and

provide a place for a variety of recreational activities.
