Painted Turtle
(Chrysemys picta)

Project Objectives

  1. To identify human/turtle interface areas where Painted Turtle mortality is highest in Columbia Basin.

  2. To educate local citizens and provide systems to alleviate turtle  mortality.

Project Legacy:

  1.  Areas near McGinty Lake- Kimberley; Rosebud Lake-Nelway; Erie Lake- Salmo; Argenta marsh- Argenta; Mirror Lake- Kaslo; Williamson's Lake- Revelstoke; Elizabeth Lake- Cranbrook; were identified as areas with particularly high Painted Turtle mortality.

  2. 'Turtle fences' and nesting substrate were provided to prevent the   turtles from crossing nearby highways- where the mortality was highs
