Reptiles & Amphibians in the Columbia Basin

Coeur d'Alene Salamander

Coeur d'Alene Salamander

Research Objectives:

  1. To study the population of the Coeur d'Alene Salamander in South Eastern B.C.:
  2. Identify successful habitat locations and specific requirements.
  3. Make recommendations to preserve these critical habitat requirements.

Preliminary Findings:

  1. Eighteen specific locations have been found to have breeding Coeur d'Alene Salamander populations in the Creston Valley and north along Kootenay Lake.
  2. The numbers of individuals in each area appears to be small- less than 50 in most cases.
  3. Habitat requirements appear to be moist splash zones by creeks and waterfalls in combination with fractured rock.
  4. Recommendations are being formulated to protect these sites at  present.
