Coeur d'Alene Salamander

Coeur d'Alene Salamander
Research Objectives:
- To study the population of the Coeur d'Alene
Salamander in South Eastern B.C.:
- Identify successful habitat locations and specific
requirements.
- Make recommendations to preserve these critical
habitat requirements.
Preliminary Findings:
- Eighteen specific locations have been found to
have breeding Coeur d'Alene Salamander populations in the Creston
Valley and north along Kootenay Lake.
- The numbers of individuals in each area appears
to be small- less than 50 in most cases.
- Habitat requirements appear to be moist splash
zones by creeks and waterfalls in combination with fractured rock.
- Recommendations are being formulated to protect
these sites at present.
