There are several classification
systems for assigning priority for species at risk, employed by
various agencies and organizations throughout the world. Recently,
attempts have been made to standardize these systems to provide
some consistency across jurisdictional boundaries, whether they
are provincial, state, national or international. All systems have
the common goal of categorizing and assigning some degree of rarity
to species, and to objectively determine what is considered to be
endangered, threatened, sensitive, vulnerable, unique and rare.
