This is the Columbia Connections Grade 6 Unit. The unit is designed to be completed in 3 to 6 classes. It focuses on the development of the Rossland area in conjunction with discovery of gold and copper deposits in the area. In addition to the basic information text and activities for Rossland, three appendices with some activities are included. Teachers may use the appendices and/or activities if they wish.
RATIONALE AND APPROACH
| Topic: | The impact of mineral deposits on the Rossland area of the West Kootenay |
| ILOs: | 1. Interpret aerial photos, maps, legends, and scales. 2. Assess the relationships between cultures and the environment. |
| Geography Skills: | -Understand that real objects can be represented by
a picture or symbol on a map -Interpret and use map legends on different lands of maps. -Use cardinal and intermediate directions. -Compare maps and photos of the same area. -Locate towns and bodies of water on a map of the region. -Determine distances using scale on a map. |

| Activity Sequence: | 1. Administer the pre-assessment activity to determine the present understanding of the material in the unit by the students and determine areas to be particularly concentrated on or omitted. 2. Copy and distribute the information package on “Rossland: The Early Years of the Golden City”. A shared reading strategy is suggested so that students may take turns reading and also discussing the material. 3. Copy and distribute activity #1. Students may work individually or in groups. Use the answer key for marking. 4. Follow step three for activity #’s 2-4. (Note that activity #4 is an individual or group activity involving locating places on an aerial photograph, but does not involve any recording on paper or recording on the photo itself.) 5. Teachers may elect to use the appendices and accompanying activities. Answer keys are provided for these activities. |
| Evaluation: | There are may ways of evaluating this unit. Some suggestions are provided. 1. Answers for activities 1-4 could be collected and assessed. 2. Marks could be assigned based on student participation during class discussions of the material. 3. A criterion referenced test could be developed based on the material covered in the unit if the teacher desires a more formal evaluation. |
| Extension: | 1. Organize a field trip to the Rossland Museum and a tour of the LeRoi mine. 2. Use the map to develop a walk around tour of the streets of Rossland. Visit the sites of some of the famous buildings. Look for evidence of the railroads that ran through Rossland. |

to draw conclusions.
