Appendix A: Diagnostic Checklist

 

Is the plant annual or perennial?

 

Are there rhizomes or stolons?

 

Is the ligule made up of hairs or a membrane?

 

How long is the ligule?

 

Are there auricles?

 

Are the leaf blades flat or inrolled?

 

List the surface type for the leaf sheath (smooth, rough, hairy etc.)

 

Are the sheaths open or closed (how far along the length)?

 

Name the type of flowerhead (spike,branching).

 

Is the flowerhead a spike or branching?

 

How many spikelets at each node?

 

Is the spikelet round or compressed?

 

Are there sterile flowers (or florets)?

 

Are the sterile flowers above or below the fertile ones?

 

How many flowers to a spikelet?

 

Are the glumes as long, longer or shorter than the spikelet?

 

How many nerves on the back of the first glume?

 

How many nerves on the back of the second glume?

 

How long is the glume?

 

How many nerves are on the lemma?

 

Are the nerves of the lemma parallel or converging at the tip?

 

Is the lemma rounded or compressed keeled on the back?

 

Is the lemma awnless, awned on the back or terminally awned?

 

Where is the lemma awn attached: on the tip or on the back?

 

Is the lemma either webbed or bearded at the base? (yes or no)?

 

Is the palea as long as the lemma?

 

Is there a callus?

 

Is there any obvious colour on the stem or the flowerhead?
