Introductory observations and collections
were made in 1997 to identify areas where butterfly activity appeared
to be most noticeable and to determine the main habitat types present
in the area. Subsequent sampling has focused on these centers of
activity, the gamut of habitat types containing known butterfly
larval food plants, and surrounding forest areas. A total of 46
field trips were made between 11 May 1997 and 12 September 1999.
Each trip usually included 2 to 3 hours of butterfly collecting
and watching at selected locations. Time spent at each site within
the study area was variable and based on the amount of observed
butterfly activity. Trips were timed in accordance with suitable
weather conditions and times of the day most conducive to butterfly
activity. Trips were also timed so as to reduce the chance of not
observing a species by simply not being present during its flight
period.
